A New Baby

You and your new baby have arrived home! You are happy and probably overwhelmed at the same time. Its all new, but gradually you will get the hang of it.

Getting to know your new baby may take time, lots of people will be full of advice for you. Trust yourself to work out what is right for you and youe baby.

Though everyone's experience is different, all new parents should expect lots of changes in their lives.

Many women feel a bit down for a short time after having a baby. Some women suffer from more serious depression. Signs of depression include crying a lot, worrying all the time, feeling alone or helpless. You can get help, seek advice and support from a health worker, if family support doesn't help.

Your new baby's first year is a time of incredible growth and change. Enjoy your baby, take a break when you need one. Looking after yourself as a parent is important. You need to find time to have a break and rest. This means getting support from friends , family or childrens services, without feeling guilty about asking for help. Asking for support or help is sensible and a sign of strength, not failure.

The more energy you have, the easier it is for you to take care of your baby. The time you spend with your baby now will help set up a lifelong relationship that will change and develop as your child grows.

Love and Care

Healthy food, warm clothes and a comfortable home are very important in helping children grow, but children need more:

Babies and young children need lots of kisses and cuddles. Talking and singing to them works well to.

Babies know they are special if, when being fed, they get lots of smiles and it is a stress free time.

Even very young babies will respond to any form of communication and know they are important to you.
